"I really enjoyed my time with Orphanage Outreach and always remember it as a positive experience in my life. I'm really glad I took the time out of my winter break to go to the Dominican Republic and serve at the orphanage. Those children will always be in my heart."

Orphanage Outreach Teach Corps

Orphanage Outreach is striving to provide opportunities to orphaned, abandoned and disadvantaged children. We are primarily accomplishing this mission through education. Education is the key to opening up doors of possibilities for the children we are working with.

Teaching English/Literacy

During the school year, you will have the opportunity to teach in local Dominican grade schools. We teach basic English vocabulary in the lower grades to generate an interest in learning English, to show that it is fun, and to create confidence that it is possible! We also assist with teaching Spanish literacy, where the children appreciate the opportunity to read from books. During school breaks and during the summer, you'll be working to provide these same school children with fun and interactive learning camps, focusing on English and reading, but also including art, recreation, music, and health.
Long-term program leaders are essential to keeping our programs running. If you are interested in a two year position as an Orphanage Outreach Program Leader contact Tom Eklund at director@orphanage-outreach.org

Teach Corps Internships

Orphanage Outreach English Institute
Two hundred 5th-9th graders attend the Orphanage Outreach English Institute in Monte Cristi, Dominican Republic from September through May. As a long term Teach Corps volunteer, you'll be team teaching with other volunteers using a well documented English as a second language curriculum called "Side by Side".  No teaching experience is required. English only speakers will likely be working in a strict English immersion program with the 3rd and 4th year students. Spanish speakers will likely be working in the lower two levels, where some Spanish still needs to be spoken in giving directions, explanations, etc.  During school breaks and during the summer, you'll be working with the same students in themed English learning camps.
