Christian Mission Program

Orphanage Outreach invites you to join us for a short term mission trip to the Dominican Republic. We have many opportunities to work with the churches and communities of the northwestern part of the Dominican Republic. You are invited to join us any week of the year. Individuals, couples, families, and church teams are invited to join us.

During the school year, we are normally teaching English and literacy at the Orphanage Outreach English Institute and in local schools. The school system in the Dominican Republic is the worst in North and South America; extra help is greatly appreciated. And learning English provides career and educational opportunities. During the school year, we promise that volunteers of all faiths will be comfortable working with Orphanage Outreach.

During the summer, we offer specific Christian based programs for Christian individuals, couples, families, and church teams. Our normal program is to provide vacation bible schools camps to the orphanage children, to local neighborhoods, and in nearby villages. For the kids, it's like a week at Disneyworld!

Each camp has a Christian theme, and starts out with worship songs and a bible lesson introduction. The kids then divide into four groups (little girls, little boys, older girls, older boys) and rotate through various stations. The stations can consist of different things, including bible lesson, arts and crafts, recreation and activities, health, reading, English, and music. Mission participants can lead the opening and closing, act as guides to lead the groups from station to station, and as station leaders to lead each station. We normally do two camps a day, morning and afternoon, to two different sets of kids. Experienced summer college interns provide support to short term volunteers and church mission teams.

Some church teams elect to do something different, or in addtion - construction, health, sports, baseball, etc.

The weekly itinerary consists of:

Saturday - Travel
Sunday - Orientation, Week Prep, Meet the Kids, Walk Through Town, Church
Monday Through Thursday - Camp/Work, Special Evening Activities
Friday - Cultural Morning Activity, Buffet Lunch, Beach Afternoon Swim
Saturday - Travel

You will be living in "summer camp" facilities, either at the orphanage or at the Orphanage Outreach English Institute - bunk house sleeping, buffet meals, good toilets/showers. Simple and rustic but comfortable. Details

The program donation fee for one week is $800/person plus airfare. For teams of 10 or more, the program fee can be reduced to just $500/person. Children under age 18 traveling with a parent have just a $200 program donation fee. For every 10 full program fees paid, the 11th is waived. The program fee donation includes housing, food, ground transportation, insurance, professional on-site American and Canadian leadership, and includes a signficant donation to provide the basic necessities at the orphanage. We are partnering with the churches that operate the orphanages we work with, and the other churches in the community. We are looking for small groups and churches to join us. When more international churches join us, we can partner with more local churches, and serve more children and adults.

Orphanage Outreach has been working in the Dominican Repubilc since 1994. Over 7000 volunteers have joined us during this time. We have a full time on-stie staff of American and Canadian leaders. We have never had a volunteer's personal safety threatened. We use common sense safety and health practices. Details

This is a great opportunity for individuals, couples, families, a general church team, a youth team, a men's group, or a woman's group. We invite you to join us!

If you haven't led a team to a developing country before (and especially if you have!), you will appreciate the "turn key" approach we take. We will purchase the insurance, meet you at the airport, arrange the meals, housing, ground transportation, and projects. You'll still be busy, but it will be time well spent working with and supporting your team members, not managing basic logistics. More info!

Our Mission

The mission of Orphanage Outreach is to provide opportunities to orphaned, abandoned, and disadvantaged children. Certainly the children who live at the orphanage are a focus of ours, but all the children of Monte Cristi are disadvantaged in some way. The economics of the town are very poor, the children only go to school for half a day, and there are minimal extracurricular activities for the children to participate in.
