New solar panels installed!

Project Green is a program of Orphanage Outreach and the Hope of a Child Orphanage to utilize our natural resources to become more self sufficient in the areas of energy, water, and food.

Energy:
Energy is in limited supply in Monte Cristi, with outages of 2-18 hours every day. And it is very expensive, 4 times the cost/kilowatt hour of electricity in the states. Therefore, as part of Project Green we are working to generate power from the ample supply of wind and sun in Monte Cristi, and reduce the demand through the use of low wattage light bulbs and appliances, and using timers on lights and ceiling fans.

In 2007, we hope to install 3000 watts of solar panels to put the Dominican sunshine to good use. The average cost of each kilowatt of solar capacity costs $5.

Please donate to this project today!

Water:
For much of the year, Monte Cristi is a desert. And the supply of water from the city is very sporadic. We plan to do more to collect and utilize rain water from the roofs of the building, and store the water is underground cisterns to use for showering, toilets, and irrigation.

For more information, contact Tom Eklund.

Food:
The climate in Monte Cristi is perfect for gardening and raising food, especially if the supply of water is reliable. We plan to provide more fruits and vegetables for use by the orphanage children and Orphanage Outreach volunteers.
