John Steve with Wilman

University of Virginia Trip Article

John Steve Carbonell Catilo volunteered with Orphanage Outreach in the Dominican Republic during the spring of 2004 with a team from the University of Virginia. While at the orphanage in Esperanza, John Steve made some significant friendships with the orphanage staff and the boys at the orphanage.

John Steve worked long days at the orphanage to dig a ditch, install cement culters, and cover it up. By helping to complete this project, John Steve created a new play area for the children at the orphanage.

Tragically, John Steve passed away in a boating accident on June 25, 2004, just three months after his trip with Orphanage Outreach to the Dominican Republic. John Steve was at that time teaching kids rowing during the summer program in Alexandria, Virginia.

Orphanage Outreach, along with John Steve's parents Alex and Aurora Catilo, have set up the John Steve Carbonell Catilo Memorial Orphanage Education Fund. This funds will sponsor educational needs at the orphanage, including educational field trips for the kids, pre-school education, English education, library books, computers, and advanced academic education and skills training.

John Steve was a thoughtful, sincere, committed young man. He lived his life to the fullest, making a difference in many people's lives. Through the John Steve Carbonell Catilo Memorial Education Fund, he will continue to make a difference in the lives of the children living at the Hope of a Child Orphanage in Monte Cristi.
