I am the advisor for SOSH (Students in Optometric Service to Humanity) out of the University of Alabama Birmingham School of Optometry. For each of the past 8 years a group consisting of myself and about 20 students has traveled outside the US during our spring break to provide eye care and eye wear to people in need. Our trip to Monte Cristi in March 2004 exceeded all of our expectations. With regard to accommodations and logistics, this has become the trip against which all others are and will be measured. It is truly a turn-key mission operation. Fantastic job! We will be here again.
...John Essinger, O.D., University of Alabama-Birmingham
Orphanage Outreach gave me the perfect opportunity to go to a different country and help the people there. Not only did they gain something while we were there, but our group did as well. It was an experience that will never be forgotten. I can't wait to do it again!
...Allison Lord, University of Alabama--Birmingham
Working with Orphanage Outreach was one of the best service opportunities in which I have participated. It was a terrific opportunity to see the poverty and need that exists in other countries and have a chance to help make things a little better. I would highly
recommend this program to anyone else.
...Zachary McCarty, University of Alabama-Birmingham
Orphanage Outreach was so great to work with. They were professional, organized, friendly, and ready to answer all our questions. It was obvious how much they love the orphanage and the people of Monte Cristi.
...Marsha Swanson, O.D., University of Alabama-Birmingham
This experience is one that I highly recommend. My three weeks in Esperanza made reality come alive for me. I saw things and experienced things that only these kids and this organization have to offer."
...Elizabeth Wright, Birmingham-Southern
I was really surprised at the obvious poverty level of the surrounding community. There is no doubt that there is an enormous need to do all we can to help these people in whatever way we can. The hospitality extended to myself and my team was incredible, and the children were absolutely delightful! I would absolutely encourage anyone thinking of volunteering to do so. It is certainly rewarding and fills you with a great sense of accomplishment!
...Kim Ocampo, University of Alabama--Birmingham
This was my 4th mission trip and Orphanage Outreach is by far the most organized. I always felt safe, and the food was incredible.
...Michelle Self, University of Alabama Birmingham
My life is changed forever because of this trip. I realize what is important in life and how meaningful it is to serve others. I realize how little material things mean and how much I take for granted. I would do this again in a second.
...Bonnie Mallard, University of Alabama-Birmingham
My three weeks in Esperanza opened my eyes not only to a new culture, but also to the ability that I have to make a difference. The boys at the orphanage taught me, challenged me, and touched my heart in a way that no one else
could. Orphanage Outreach provides the structure that makes you feel secure, and the freedom for you to explore your passion. I will forever treasure my memories of this experience and the brotherhood of the boys at Esperanza.
...Whitney Hasen, Birmingham-Southern
I had a great time at orphanage outreach and felt like I was well taken care of. We had excellent food, enjoyed a fun hike up the mountain, and saw how our hard work had a direct impact on the people of Monte Cristi. I also felt very safe at the orphanage.
...Katie Bond, University of Alabama-Birmingham
This is a well organized program that really helps the children.
...Allan Pradillo, University of Alabama-Birmingham
I can't imagine that I could have had a better time! This trip was my 5th overseas mission trip to provide eye care. Tom and his staff kept us well informed from the time we started the process in the States to the final day of our trip. Orphanage Outreach was by far the most organized host we have ever had. If this is your first trip out of the States you will not be disappointed. We had no worries. I can't wait to go back and visit with them again.
...Ruthann Betz-Essinger, University of Alabama-Birmingham

The Orphanage Outreach program provides a culturally relevant and a meaningful program in learning English for the children who live in the orphanage as well as the community of Monte Cristi.
...Bryson Dean, Alaska

Visiting the orphanage in Monte Christi was one of the biggest eye openers I could ever imagine. These kids were some of the happiest kids I've seen with the smallest amount of possessions. It truly was a trip I'll never forget and I'm so grateful for all that they taught me. I will carry this experience with me forever."

...Michael McGillis, Christ’s Church of the Valley
It's amazing to be able to be a part of such creative, unique, talented, and caring children. These children bring out the happy and loving side of me. I've never smiled so much. From the time I came here till I left.
...Lisa Norman, Arizona State University
Sharing, laughing, learning, and singing are the greatest gifts we can give each other. Each one of these children have touched our hearts and we have taken home a piece of their heart with us.
….Kathy Fazio, Teacher, Phoenix
Visiting Esperanza was a very fulfilling time and made a positive impression on my life. I feel like the kids made a difference in me as we made a difference for them.
...Dana Hawkins, Arizona State University
This trip was a life changing experience. Although the children live a more rustic, primitive lifestyle than many of us have ever experienced....they are probably the richest people I have ever come across. They have a well established since of community and belonging. They also bestowed kindness, gentleness and love for each other. This unity, feeling of connectedness and happiness was shared with the volunteers. I really enjoyed serving the children and sharing with them what we had to give as well. I learned a great deal by interacting with the children everyday. Orphanage Outreach also attracts a very special kind of person to come and serve. I did not want to leave and can't wait to do it again next year.
...Angie Isaac, Teacher, Phoenix
This was my third trip and I am proud to be associated with an organization that is in the trenches and has provided a new direction for the children that they could have never conceived of without Orphanage Outreach.
...Paul Charette, Tucson
Orphanage Outreach truly makes a difference in the hearts of orphaned and abandoned children. Although the children at the orphanages have very little, they are the happiest kids I know. Compared to American kids who have everything, yet are still unhappy and want more.
…. Joy Haugen, Phoenix
I think this was an extremely rewarding experience. Everybody in the Dominican is very welcoming, and the orphanage children are so warm and loving. I wanted to take them all home with me, but since I couldn't, I was very glad that I had the opportunity to spend time with some great kids!
...Kim Barber, Arizona State University
It's not an easy trip, but it's very rewarding. It's not easy because things go wrong or things don't work out they way you've planned. But when you see the smiles on the kids' faces or get a hug at the end of a long day, you know you've made a difference.
...Rachel Wallington, Arizona State University
This experience is guaranteed to exceed any expectations you may have.
….Caren Crutcher, Arizona State University
The week I spent in Monte Christi with the children is one of the best weeks of my life. I won't ever forget it.
….Mark Roddy, Phoenix Architect
This was an amazing experience. I've had the opportunity to travel all over the world, but this was a little different than anyplace I've been.
...John Black, Phoenix
24 hours upon returning home to Phoenix, I had a new positive perspective about life. I initially believed I was in the Dominican Republic to teach, however the people and the culture educated me beyond anything I taught. I want to return!
...Ashley Clancy, University of Arizona
It was one of the best experiences of my life. I learned more from the kids than I could ever teach them. Thank you for this great opportunity.
...Anthony Marksch, Tucson
This trip was one of the best experiences of my life.
...Stephanie Sowter, Phoenix
It was an extremely humbling experience. It has shown me some things that we consider our needs are in many cases simply wants. I saw a joy and contentment in the children and the adults, which proved to me that we do not "need" anything more that food, shelter, family, friends, and more importantly love for the Lord and faith that he will provide for our needs. Before I left for the trip, the only thing on my mind was how we were going to help the children. I found that I was the one being helped. I plan on returning next year with my wife and hopefully a basic understanding of the Spanish language.
...Dave Terrel, Christ's Church of the Valley, Glendale
Going to the Orphanage and donating your time, heart, and energy to these children is an inspiring and eye-opening experience. You instantly fall in love with these kids because they are so loving and warm. You really learn a lot about the Dominican culture and understand and value their differences. The experience is awesome and you will not come home without being moved. You leave with the intentions of teaching these kids so much, which you do, but you leave learning more from them then you could possibly imagine.
...Melissa Thiebaut, Arizona State University

The week I spent with the boys at the Good Samaritan orphanage in Esperanza was easily the best week of my life. That doesn't mean that every part of it was easy by any means, but it was a life changing experience I would not trade for the world.

...Kelly Durflinger, California
Orphanage Outreach is amazing. I found myself thinking “I could do this the rest of my life and be happy”.
...Alexa Valadez, Pepperdine University
My time in Esperanza was one of the best experiences in my life. Over the course of the week, I came to learn from, grow with, and love these children and the Dominican culture more than I ever imagined I could. The kids taught me about generosity, joy and unconditional love. I desired to serve in Esperanza to help the kids grow emotionally, mentally and spiritually, but in the end, I think it was the kids who helped me. I encourage anyone who has a heart for kids to visit Esperanza--it will truly change your life.
...Kelly Dahl, Pepperdine University
The experience and lessons that I learned while I was in the DR can not be expressed in words. Each child is an inspiration and is such a survivor. To see God work through the kids and community of Monti Cristi left me in awe. I was able to grow in my faith and build incredible friendships.
...Becky Therres, Hope International

...Stephanie Castillo, Castilleja School
It is hard to describe the experience I had in Laguna Salada. The boys there are so hardworking and eager to learn. They are really amazing kids. To have the opportunity to teach kids who are so well behaved and hungry for knowledge is incredible. I enjoyed my experience so much that I decided to drop out of law school so I can go back in the fall. What is going on at that orphanage is a wonderful thing and I feel so blessed to have been a small part of it. The other volunteers were all great people and I had a lot of fun and made some good friends. If you are thinking about going, DO IT.
...Katie Larson, UCLA

...Jenessa Povery, Pepperdine University
My experience with Orphanage Outreach and with the orphanage in Esperanza was the beginning of my life in service to others. The boys at the orphanage have left their hand prints on my heart and I will go through life helping others as I remember them and the pure joy they bring to me.
...Leah Petrowsky, Pepperdine University
I don't know that I've ever smiled so much. The children, volunteers, and Orphanage Outreach staff in Esperanza inspired me in both expected and unexpected ways: each will always hold a special place in my heart.
...Kristen Sheline, Occidental
Unlike other mission experiences I have had, working with Orphanage Outreach was really about the kids. All the group bonding and personal spiritual growth were neat by-products of the hands-on work we did with the children. I can't think of a much more satisfying feeling than to walk away from an experience and know that because of our efforts in Christ, some orphans in the DR now can write their names! You see that the small victories make a life.
...Stephanie Cedeno, Pepperdine University
Going to the Dominican republic was unlike any experience I've had before. The children were beautiful, eager to learn, and even at their young age, some of the most exceptional individuals I've ever met. Orphanage Outreach taught me to view life at home from a different perspective - I would definitely encourage anyone who would like to make a difference in this world to take this trip.
...Jacqueline Lopour, UCLA
The Orphanage Outreach programs allows someone to participate and experience what it is like to be in a third world country without worry about your own health. The program is so well run that you actually experience much of what the children do daily. For anyone who feels led to help children I encourage you to participate in this program.
...Jill Quye, Pepperdine University
The experience in Esperanza with Orphanage Outreach truly changed my perspectives and in many ways my life.
...Carmen Aybar, Pepperdine University
The program was amazing, not only could I see a positive impact on the kids, but I learned and grew just as much in the week I spent working with the children at Orphanage Outreach, I was all together an amazing experience.
...Danielle Foster, Pepperdine University
My time in Esperanza was incredible. The children at the orphanage are thirsty for love an attention. Getting to know those kids was a great privilege, and I am forever indebted to them for allowing me into their precious lives.
...Mediha Din, Loyola Marymount
Working at this orphanage is, and will always be, one of the best decisions that I have made in my life. I can't describe in words what I gained from those kids. I love them and thank God that He placed them in my life.
….Lindsay Frederickson, Pepperdine University
For my last spring break of college I was looking for something out of the ordinary and fulfilling. I found through Orphanage Outreach the priceless joy of reading with children. To give to those who are eager to learn the gift of knowledge is perhaps the most fulfilling experience I could have found.
….Erin Egley, Pepperdine University
Going to Esperanza for two weeks was a wonderful experience. The kids are so sweet and grateful. I think the most valuable lesson I learned here is that we are all the same, but different at the same time.
...Sarah Stroot, UCLA
Orphanage Outreach is a dynamic opportunity for volunteers to move out of their comfort zones and make a positive impact on the lives of children across the globe.
...Neal Murata, Pepperdine University
I signed up for this trip on a whim, I received an email, was immediately interested and sent my deposit in two days later. I had no idea what I was getting myself into yet I knew that it was going to be something pretty incredible. On my flight to the Dominican Republic I couldn't decide if I was just really nervous or extremely excited. Driving up to the orphanage and seeing the faces of all the kids put me at ease but it couldn't quite prepare me for the entire experience that I was about to have. This was probably the most amazing two weeks of my life. All of the kids are so wonderful. They are just dying to hug you and get to know you and bring you into their incredibly huge hearts. It's nearly impossible to walk away from this trip without having been touched by these amazing little kids. Getting myself to the Dominican Republic was easy but I'm still trying to deal with the walking away part. I haven't stopped thinking about them since I left, I can't wait to go back and see them I miss them so much already.
….Megan Shirley, UCLA
Spending one week with these children had the most profound impact on my own life, I am so glad I didn't miss this unique opportunity to help. Sitting talking with one of the many supportive and enthusiastic volunteers I decided that I would do what I could where I could, Esperanza was the perfect place to do so. I cannot wait to go back again. Where I had gone in the dark, with the intention of helping others, I left feeling like I was the one who has grown from this incredible experience. There is so much you can learn in even just the laugh of one of the boys that despite my strives to teach, I left as the student learning from the spirits of the children. This is a great chance to not only help, but grow as a person too!
…Elizabeth Sullivan, University of California at Santa Barbara
This is an opportunity of a lifetime. It was so much more than just an eye-opening experience. The children in Esperanza have so much to offer, more than anyone would ever imagine. After a few days, you will realize that you don't want to leave them. I know that's how it was for me.
...Kelsey Ahearn, UCLA
This trip opened my eyes to another world. When I saw how happy they are with so little in their lives, it touched me. They have no idea what else is out there for them. They don't know what they could have. The children and locals are just so happy. It makes you feel so good that donating and going on this trip helps them stay this content and supply them with a better future. Teaching them English, sports, math, reading, etc is sending them out into the world with a future full of skills and ideas. The feeling that you are left with is truly awesome. I had my "it" moment a few times when children just run up and grab onto you or ask you to take their photo when they will never see it. That is when I knew that being there was making a difference. When you see what has been done with your time and money, you will be as happy as them. Be a part of another world and join Orphanage Outreach.
...Christine Hampton, California
Visiting a third world country is educational, to help/touch a few souls is commendable. Being able to do both is truly a balanced opportunity.
...Jon Ricks, Palo Alto College
Orphanage Outreach is a rockin' awesome experience. Orphanage Outreach is the one place you can play sports, sing silly songs and laugh 'till it hurts all in the name of giving back. You're giving orphans one on one time, teaching English to local school children and bringing donations that benefit both the orphans and the local community. You can see the difference you're making. Add a different culture to that, a beautiful beach and being at camp with the other volunteers makes for a fun, once in a lifetime, bonding experience.
...Michele Morris, Los Angeles
I could try to explain the experience I had in Esperanza but it would do no good. I've already tried to do it here back home. The feeling I had throughout this trip was like none other I've ever had. No matter how tired or worn out or hungry (or in need of a warm shower) I was, not once did this bring down my mood or energy. It was like a constant feeling of fulfillment in everything done there....from digging out tree stumps and digging ditches to teaching math or just playing games with the kids. Every little thing done there was done for a group of extraordinary kids who needed, deserved, and greatly appreciated all of it. And I think that's what made this the one of the best (if not THE best) experiences of my life.
... Joseph Fontana, California
This was a great experience for me, and I think that if everyone in the United States had the same experience, the world would be a better place.
..Stephanie Falstrom, University of California-Santa Barbara
I can't tell you how much of an impact I feel that one week has made on my life. Now that I'm back home in Los Angeles and surrounded by the hustle bustle of people trying to get somewhere or get something in a hurry, it's so refreshing to think back to Esperanza and the time I spent with all those beautiful children. Although I hope I provided some sort of help to the kids through my participation, I feel that they helped me hundred times more as far as placing priorities in my life and realizing the important things in this world.
...Payam Parvinchiha, UCLA
Going to Esperanza was one of the best experiences of my life this far. Seeing the happiness and excitement in those kids eyes is unforgettable. They are so hungry for love, so eager to learn, and I was definitely ready to give all I had to them. I left knowing that my life had been enriched just as much as theirs had.
….Amber Crowley, University of California--Berkeley
The trip was an extraordinary experience. I gained a hundredfold more than I gave.
...Ginny Jones, Los Angeles
My experience at Laguna Salada is by far the most rewarding thing I have ever done! The kids may not have the best living conditions, food, or education, but their determination to learn, as well as their willingness to accept all of the volunteers is truly admirable. Before the trip, my friends made me question how much of a difference I could make in just one week. Now as I look back on my experience, I think about how my one-on-one kid changed from being coerced to reading on the first day, to approaching me on the last day and asking me to read with him. It's the little things that you will never forget.
….Joyce Che, University of California, Berkeley
Parents and children should encourage each other to join this program. Thanks to my daughter who invited me to work at orphanage with her. It's my honor to witness college students spending spring break for underprivileged children.
….Jean Che, California
This trip was better for my six year old son than 10 trips to Disneyland.
...Timothy J. Rosio M.D., Newport Beach, CA
In the Dominican, the people find happiness in the smallest, but most important things: love, community, friendship, openness, kindness. This attitude was contagious! It definitely helped to put perspective on my otherwise hectic life. My stress level dropped and my attitude improved 200%! When I think about my week there, it makes me smile.
….Sarah Chandley, University of California-Berkeley
For a couple who has been fortunate enough to have had many wonderful travels, the Orphanage Outreach trip stands out as a uniquely enriching experience that will always be cherished. The opportunity of working with the children and contributing to the necessary projects has given us a feeling of "giving" like we have never had before.
...Joyce and Rich Lahl, Murietta, CA
If you want to have an amazing experience where you change the lives of others, and you are changed by them, volunteer with Orphanage Outreach.
...Joyleen Tropel, University of San Diego
I was in the absolute right place at the absolute right time. It was more than being full-filled, it was being completed as a person. Materialistically these children have next-to-nothing, but they have the biggest hearts of any children I've ever met.
...Barbie Ahrens, California
Working and living with the kids is an experience that I'll never forget. It was so rewarding and I would suggest it to anyone who is interested in making a difference in a child's life.
...Susie Bodine, Director of Marketing, Software Company
Colorado
I'm amazed by the resilience of the Dominican children. Their eyes were alive with delight, thankful for everything they had, regardless of the fact that they had very little. I saw my future in those eyes, and am nothing less than inspired to change the world. You can make a difference--and it begins in Esperanza!
...Nicole Gettman, Denver University
This was definitely an eye-opening experience! I had such a great time with everyone! The kids are absolutely adorable. Not only are they learning from you, but you're learning from them as well - and that's what makes the experience even that much more enjoyable! I would recommend this trip to anyone and everyone!
...Ashley Bosa, University of Colorado
Absolutely go on this trip with no hesitations. This trip will be an experience of a life time that will change the way you think about different cultures, people, your values, and yourself. It is a great way to serve others and really make a difference not only in the lives of orphans but also in the lives of community members.. I could not think of a more productive, spiritual, and beneficial way to spend four weeks. It has been a truly awakening experience. You will fall in love with the Dominican Republic and all the children at the orphanage.
...Angela Montgomery, Colorado State University
I was a little hesitant to go on this trip...but looking back, I don't regret it AT ALL. I learned a lot from both interacting with the other volunteers and the kids. YOU SHOULD GO.
...Amy Burkhardt, University of Colorado
If you love working with children, this is the experience of a lifetime. A new country, a new language, and new people, what an adventure! The children are craving one on one attention...they can't get enough of our love, time, and energy. Try to raise the money and see where the path will take you.
….Katy Gimpel, Colorado State University
This was the best Spring Break that I could have possibly had. I'm sorry. It's just not possible to put into words how incredible it really was. It was the kind of place that changes you, affects you, digs deep into your heart and won't let go. It was the kind of experience that makes you think about life and alters your perspective. It makes you a better person.
...Emily Fahle, University of Colorado
I am so glad that I chose to spend my spring break in Esperanza instead of with my friends at the beach. The experiences that I gained from just one week working at the orphanage will stay with me forever and have made me a better person. I am eternally grateful for this experience.
...Sarah Hearn, University of Colorado
This trip was a wonderfully unique way to spend my spring break. I met so many inspirational people- the kids at the orphanage, the other volunteers, and the leaders of the program. I don't think anyone can understand how great this trip was unless they experience it for themselves. I came away from this trip humbled, and with an even greater sense of myself and the things that are important to me.
...Lucy Stookesberry, University of Colorado
By far my favorite spring break trip yet. It was so amazing to see how happy the people there are without all the material possessions we have in America. It changed my outlook on life and I had an amazing time working with the kids there. If you are thinking about going, definitely do it, you won't regret it!
...Lucy Masemer, Colorado State University
I had been planning for my week in the Dominican Republic for months, but nothing could have prepared me for my experience. I not only received the opportunity to teach children, but I learned from them as well. After my girls worked hard at their English lessons, they taught me card games, drew me pictures, helped me with my Spanish and made bracelets for me. It amazed me how people there who have so little are so willing to give anything they can. And I can honestly say, there is no better feeling in the world than seeing my girls' happy faces during their lessons when they would give me the correct answer. This week in the DR is probably the best thing I have ever done in my life, and I believe I came out of it a better person.
...Meagan Perko, University of Colorado
Never before have I experienced such a felling of gratitude and reward then lending my knowledge and love to the children of Laguna Salada."

...Monica Meyer, Colorado State University
This trip was definitely life-changing! I have worked with many, many American kids and these kids by far are the easiest to teach, as well as to love. They are constantly smiling from ear to ear, and they strive to learn anything you are willing to teach them. Going on this trip has opened my eyes and helped me to realize the important things of life, and what we take for granted.
...Kami Kinoshita, University of Colorado
Orphanage Outreach is an absolutely awesome experience. The kids are so anxious to learn and to get to know you. I've never had more fun in my life.

...Steven Beecham, Colorado State University
When people ask me to tell them about my trip, the only thing I can say is 'everything'. I witnessed such joy and sorrow, such happiness but also such hardship. But I left with a wonderful gift . . the gift of gratitude. Gratitude about all the blessing I have, gratitude for the opportunity for this experience, and gratitude for hope, resilience and happiness that is at the essence of the human spirit. If you would like to change your perspective and actually take a rewarding and fulfilling trip, then this is for you.
...Jennifer Janzen, University of Colorado
If you are thinking about volunteering, do it! No other experience in life can match what you get through Orphanage Outreach. I have never met a people so friendly and quick to smile as those in the Dominican Republic. Every person I met in Esperanza greeted me with a warm heart and an open hand. From the time I arrived to the moment I left, I felt immersed in a culture unlike any I had seen before. But in the end, the children were by far the greatest experience of all. I taught them a little bit of English, but they taught me so much more. My life is better for having known them. I learned that a subtle smile, a little laughter, and a gentle soul are all you need to love and be loved in this world. So stop hesitating! Sign up! I guarantee you will improve your life, and more importantly, the lives of so many others! If you're not busy living, you're busy dying. That's all there is to it.
….Jeff Puckett, University of Colorado
Working with children in the Dominican Republic was an absolutely incredible experience. They will break your heart and make you cry. They will also make you laugh and sing. In one week, you will make friends that can last a lifetime. You won't want to come home. And you WILL come back.
….Elizabeth Hartman, University of Colorado
I am a different person since my trip to the Dominican Republic. I learned so much about another place, another language, other people and myself. I believe that the orphanage also taught be about another kind of love, one that has filled my heart with light and opened my eyes. I can't wait to return to Esperanza.
…Nora Dumke, University of Colorado
Working there was an incredible experience. I will do it again, in fact, and I can't wait to go back. It was a break from life and it made an impact on others. I learned so much from the kids, their families, and the community.
….Christine Maren, University of Colorado
The time I spent in Esperanza was the most intense, emotional, difficult, but enjoyable time I've had on any trip anywhere in the world thus far. By the end of the week I was emotionally and physically exhausted but I was filled with a sense of accomplishment and pride for the work I'd done that week. The children are amazing. I found that teaching them in the school setting was a fantastic way for me to learn Spanish and learn about them and about myself. I would encourage anyone who has a love for children and/or a drive to serve others to participate in this program, it was a great way for me to learn and serve.
….Katie Ledbetter, Colorado College
This was honestly the most amazing week of my life. It changed my perspective on so many things, and I was more mentally healthy than I have ever felt. The only thing about it that was not absolutely wonderful was leaving. I can't really find words to adequately describe it.
…..Ritika Batra, Colorado
I have done a lot of traveling but nothing has changed me as much as this program. It is a wonderful thing to see how happy kids are who have nothing on our scale of living standards. The volunteers give the kids something to look forward to and the program is really changing their lives. I highly recommend it to anyone.
...Celeste Leidich, University of Colorado
This trip will make you laugh, make you cry, make you think - a lot, but it will show you that true love goes beyond any physical barrier, like language. Love is what these children have for you, and the best thing you can give them.
...Alison Rubin, Colorado
There were times when I questioned what I had gotten myself into, but looking back, I do not regret a moment of it.
....Kelly Hermanns, University of Colorado
I really enjoyed my spring break down there. It was the best possible way I could have spent my break. It was one of the most amazing and memorable experiences I have ever had. Thank you for making it possible.
...Kate Whipple, University of Colorado
I would be able to honestly say that it is the greatest week I've ever spent. I remember how nervous I was at the beginning of the week because I didn't know Spanish that well, I didn't know if I'd be a good teacher, I didn't know anyone on the trip, and because of stupid things like mosquitoes. My very basic understanding of Spanish was more than enough--I was still speaking Spanish for a week when I came home to Boston College. By the end of the week I had made friends with some of the greatest, most caring people I've ever met--I wished we could all go back to school together. I realized that I was prepared to teach, especially in the younger grades. Also, the biggest contribution we make isn't teaching--its just the time and attention and love that we give to these great kids. Bottom line--I would never do anything else for spring break--I'll be back as often as I can get the time.
….Patricia Ritze, Boston College
Definitely go on this trip. It is such an amazing experience, I can't wait to go back and see all the kids and the locals. This is not an opportunity anyone should pass up; not only are you helping the orphanage an immense amount, but you can really get inside the Dominican culture and see what the life is like, without any touristy town or feeling impeding it.
….Michelle Diamond, Colorado
I would have to say that this was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life. At times I felt like I was not strong enough to finish out the week. However, as the week went on, I began to become more comfortable with being in a foreign place. After this was all said and done, this experience has been the most fulfilling one of my life. I know now that I can do anything. More important this experience showed me how much I have relative to others in the world and I appreciate everything so much more. I am so happy I did this and miss it so much.
...Lindsay Jordan , University of Colorado

Your impact on the children at the orphanage as well as the surrounding community is very visible and it's very encouraging to see the difference a few people can make.

As a high school teacher of motivated students, suddenly being in a classroom of 3-4 year olds was a bit of a shock. Watching my own kids demonstrate their own ability to teach—and seeing their comfort with the kids—made me, a relatively experience teacher, feel at home. It was really quite remarkable!

Coming to Orphanage Outreach, I thought I would be doing a lot of teaching. However, through this experience, I believe that I learned more from the kids.
...Hilary Andrysick, Taft School
My only regret about going to Esperanza was only being there for a week. When people ask about my trip, I don't even have words to describe it. Of course, "amazing, incredible, rewarding" cover it, but they don't explain the emotions and revelations I experienced or the human bonds I created.
...Katie Annand, Wesleyan University
Certainly, I would strongly recommend this experience to high school groups:
"Reflecting on the experience, one word stands out in my mind: bond. We bonded as a group, bonded with the orphanage kids, bonded with the students at the local school, and most importantly strongly bonded with the work we did. The experience opened student's eyes and they all saw themselves continuing this type of volunteer work at our school and in future trips to Monte Cristi. The Orphanage Outreach leaders were extremely helpful, knowledgeable, encouraging, and genuinely cared about our personal and individual experiences. Having experienced different volunteer trips nationally and internationally, this is the first time a group of students has felt that they genuinely bonded with the people they served. I strongly recommend this great experience for high school students"
...Roberto d'Erizens, Faculty, Taft School
It was an experience that I think everyone should have at least once in their lifetime. It was so rewarding seeing the excitement in the children's faces.
...Rachel Berriker, University of Connecticut
My trip to Esperanza made me realize that making a concerted effort to improve the quality of someone's life is far more rewarding than any way else I can think of to spend my time. The perspectives, knowledge, and insights I gained in the span of one week are worth more to me now than any internship or job I have had. I feel privileged just being able to say I knew these kids.

...Suzy Sacher, Wesleyan University
I was amazed by the enthusiasm of the kids I met and their love for life and learning. ….Rebecca Joffe-Halpern, Wesleyan
What a wonderful experience! In addition to the gratifying feeling you get teaching the kids English and math, you end up having so much fun running around and playing with the kids and giving them caballitos (piggy-back rides), playing hand-clapping games, etc... I was nervous at first that the language barrier would be a problem, since I don't speak any Spanish. But the kids are so loving and embracing toward the volunteers that our communication through miming and smiles was enough to foster strong bonds with the kids.
...Rachel Billow, Wesleyan
The friendliest, most endearing kids anywhere. A wonderful reflection on the varieties of the human experience.
….Colleen Carey, Yale University
A completely unique experience that lets one not only make an impact on many children's lives but also learn about a whole new culture.
...Sonia Liang, Yale University
I arrived in Monte Cristi with very little Spanish or experience working with children, with nothing to lose and no idea what to expect. I left having 'touched the futures' of over 100 children and even more volunteers in more ways than I am even aware of. The beauty and rewards of an Orphanage Outreach mission are not describable, it is something you have to experience.
...Amy Peluse, Connecticut College
It was the best and most worthwhile week of my life.
...Erica Butler, Connecticut College
It was unquestionably one of the best summers of my life.

Getting involved in Orphanage Outreach was the greatest decision of my life. There is nothing more fulfilling than my time in the DR, and when I'm not there, I'm thinking about being there. The children teach you lessons, not something you can learn from a book, but life lessons. My time in the Dominican is indescribable, something that everyone should experience."

I had the most amazing four weeks in the Dominican Republic with Orphanage Outreach. I left the states hoping to have fun and make a difference. I returned having done both, but more importantly I flew home having made great friends in the other volunteers, humbled and inspired by the children, and in love with the culture and language of the DR. I would go back in a heart beat and recommend this program to anyone!
...Natalie Taylor, Rollins College
I thought that nothing could have been as amazing as my trip with Orphanage Outreach to Monti Cristi last year... my week at Esperanza proved that wrong. You will leave the Dominican and feel so many emotions... gratified, overwhelmed, fulfilled. It's just a trip that you need the experience to realize the huge impact it will have on you life and the huge impact you can have on the orphans.
….Meghan McManus, Florida 2002
It is an incredible experience! These missions not only to touch the lives of the children in the DR but impact on the lives of the volunteers as well. ...Stephanie Gapinski, Florida Atlantic University
I have never been the type of person to go off and do anything on my own-I always needed someone to hold my hand as I went along. But this trip, I went by myself, not knowing anyone. ...Lisa Fern, Augusta State University

...Christina Rodriguez, University of Georgia
My trip to the DR was simply amazing. It was wonderful to meet a group of selfless people and get away from the fast pace on the American society. Everything is so calm and peaceful in the DR, and it was great to be in a place where everything is just about living each moment and not focusing on the future. The children at the orphanage were just fantastic. To see their smiles and excitement towards life was very inspirational. They have been through hardships that I can only imagine, and they still have such positive outlooks on life, and always keep a smile on their faces. It really puts my life into perspective and helps me realize how blessed I have been. Truly an amazing experience.
...Rebecca Spence, University of Georgia
What an eye-opening experience! The kids are so loving, trusting, and happy! It's amazing the small things in life, such as
getting a math problem right, that boost the confidence of an orphan. The weekly schedule is organized, but it allows so much free time to just go over to the kids and talk or play a game with them. It was incredible to be able to see the different culture and living
conditions of the people. I am definitely considering coming back!
...April Fern, Augusta State University
The feeling you get when you are able to bond with other people that live a different lifestyle than you and speak a different language is a powerful emotion and makes us all realize that we aren't so different from one another after all.
...Jennifer Burns, University of Georgia
Getting involved in Orphanage Outreach has given me the opportunity to help children that I never
would have ordinarily. The kids love us being there and they touch your heart. The kids are amazing and the experience is amazing.
...Katy Dennison, Georgia

lives. Their amazing spirits and simple world opens your eyes to the important things in life.
...Kelsey Hoyt, Augusta State University
My experience in the Dominican Republic was the most amazing experience of my life thus far. The joy on the children's faces and in their laughter is indescribable. This week experience touched my heart in the most incredible way and I am looking forward to going back again.
….Kate Rein, University of Georgia
Going on this trip change my whole outlook on life and what is truly important. Dominicans live with the bare necessities- water, food and shelter-and I have never witnessed a happier group of people. There is too much emphasis on material things and I learned that all you really need is love and the simple basics. You life will not be fulfilled unless you experience this culture, it's absolutely amazing.
...Leeanne Hecht, University of Georgia
Even after many, many trips with Orphanage Outreach I still love the experience. It takes you out of yourself and clarifies what's important. The kids are great and working with the other volunteers is fun and it is a creative adventure that is unbeatable.
...Laura Dennison, Georgia
I know that people hate hearing the same old' saying: "It really changed my life!" but to be completely honest this is the best way to describe what happens out there. For me, I completely transformed my ways of life and became a better person when I left. I realized that life is about so much more. It's a huge reality checkout there and I would do it again in a heartbeat.
….Missy Greco, University of Georgia
How much better could anyone dream of spending Spring Break? This was an experience of a lifetime.... No---Literally!! We have a lot to gain from our experiences with these children. They are so accepting, nonjudgmental, curious, spontaneous, and innocent. Hopefully they have some insight as to how much we were touched during our time with them, but if somehow that isn't so, the simple expressions on faces and the times we joyfully spent with them are enough proof that we all positively grew more than words can express in one very short week."
...Lisa Kelly, Georgia College and State University
You walk into the Dominican Republic hoping to make a difference in someone's life. You leave realizing that they made the difference in your life. I read a book down there by John Eldridge and in it was this quote-"Don't do what the world needs. Do what makes you alive because what the world needs is more people who are alive." The spirit in those kids, the hearts of the volunteers and the mission of Orphanage Outreach is what made me alive!
...Keri Sullivan, University of Georgia
Participating on an Orphanage Outreach trip was one of the top experiences of my life.
...Lea Arnau, Stone Mountain, GA
I have worked with Orphanage Outreach for several years now and every time is a wonderful experience. I never get tired of the work we do and I would strongly recommend this trip to anyone who is looking for a way to help others and have a great time doing it.
...Katy Dennison, Georgia College and State University
I would definitely encourage others to go- This trip changed my life. Experiencing a developing country opens your eyes to all sorts of things that you can never understand solely from reading about it. The kids at the orphanage were all amazing and precious in their ability to deal with their situation and still be fun. I enjoyed getting to know all of them and being able to understand better the context in which they live.
...Dessa Cosma, University of Georgia

….Dallas Jones, Atlanta

...Angie and Alaina Fugo, Atlanta
The trip was much better than I had even hoped. The accommodations were much better than I expected, the meals were great, the kids were very receptive, and I was amazed that language was not a barrier at all. The trip was filled with simple pleasures--the kids lining up for ice cream, their singing in the bus on the way to the beach, their laughter when watching the videos, and their running up behind you to grab your hand. I'm really looking forward to going back. I hope to bring a lot of friends with me.
...Megan O'Driscoll, Atlanta
This has been the most unbelievable vacation I've ever had. There is no way to describe it. It was food for the soul.
...Becky Benoit, Atlanta
The trip was one of the best experiences of my life. I will remember this trip as long as I live. I went with my Mom, and I can't wait to go back. If I could, I would get on a plane right now. If there is a significant youth or significant parent in your life, you should definitely bring them on a mission.
...Sarah Rivard, Age 13, Atlanta
Illinois
Volunteering in the orphanage is a unique and challenging experience. In order to the most out of it, you have to have patience for these children who have so much energy and enthusiasm. You also must have patience for yourself and do your best if you are not fluent in Spanish. The kids are patient and highly motivated; they need special people to bring out the best in them and encourage them. The most rewarding aspect of the trip is the reciprocal learning taking place between yourself and the children.
...Natalie Kamberos, Chicago

...Brittaney Nicolas, Northwestern University
After this trip my life will never be the same. You get an opportunity to explore yourself and help people at the same time. The people I met at the orphanage, the volunteers and kids, have changed my life, expanded my knowledge of different cultures, and made me a better person. I will most definitely go back, and I recommend the trip to anyone. It is better to sign up, not know what to expect, not talk to anyone, and make your own assumptions and feelings about your experience. None of my future spring breaks will ever be the same, and I am so utterly grateful that I got this opportunity.
...Susan Ritacca, DePaul University
The trip was truly amazing. You can really see first hand the impact you are having on these kids. It's great to see their smiles. There's no way to describe it--you just need to be there.
...Susana Martinez, Chicago
There's no comparison between this shared experience and any of the manufactured pleasures that come with privilege and means. It was hard but it was fun, it required effort but repaid it and more. It was less indulgent than the usual spring break, yet it refreshed and opened us more than a pleasure trip.

Our week at the Esperanza orphanage was, by far, the best family vacation we have had. I learned so much about both of our daughters seeing them interact with the children...and it was all positive and amazing. Their abilities to connect transcended language barriers, and all of the externals. I saw that there is a natural bond among children which is beautiful to behold. The truth is that I cannot imagine a better way for a family to spend its vacation time together. I plan to encourage all of our extended family and friends to consider participating in this voyage of discovery. I can promise them that it will be unlike any vacation they have ever taken."

In addition, Orphanage Outreach does its best to take care of you through providing all the good food, housing facilities--basically all you need. I am so thankful for what the experience taught me, and thankful that it made a difference for someone else as well! I'd highly recommend it!

Having served nine years overseas with a missionary radio organization, I was somewhat skeptical of a short-term missions trip. However, God used our team of 22 from Huntington College to provide hard work and love at Hope of a Child Orphanage. The children of the orphanage have made a lasting impact on our lives. More importantly, the Lord worked in our hearts, challenging many of our students to consider cross-cultural ministry. We're looking forward to returning next year!
